Growing up in Bow, NH, Amber began playing tennis when she was 7 on the tennis court in her backyard. Her father, who played Division 1 tennis in college and played on the pro-circuit as well, instilled in her a love of the game. A benefit of having a tennis court at home, Amber was able to practice before and after school each day. By the age of 11, she was #1 in New England in her age group. As tennis became more and more of a priority to her, Amber and her parents decided that giving Homeschooling a shot might be the way to go. Amber really wanted to be able to spend more time on the tennis court and in the fitness center. She spent a great deal of time travelling to tournaments, often missing multiple days of school in a row. As one can imagine, this made meeting deadlines for assignments and projects very tricky at times. Amber found that being homeschooled was the best of both worlds. Her tennis game improved and she was able to train when and how she needed to. Sometimes it was not easy, but each time she stepped out onto the court, she remembered how much she loved the game. She was able to do her schoolwork on her own schedule and was even able to graduate early. While she was homeschooled, she was still able to play on the high school tennis team, as well as attend all school related events, such as the Prom. Amber was offered a full scholarship to the University of Nebraska, ranked #20 in the country in Division 1. She completed her undergraduate degree at Southern New Hampshire University, as Nebraska proved to be a little too far from home. Homeschooling in America, specifically for athletes, has been growing by leaps and bounds in the last few years. Amber credits her homeschool career and tennis training regimen with teaching her how to manage her own schedule, be organized, and learn independence that served her greatly in college. She graduated #1 in her Business Administration program and held the highest GPA of all student athletes. After school, Amber worked at her alma mater, SNHU in admissions, but ultimately, a career in tennis drew her back in. Now, the Tim Mayotte Tennis Academy and The Thoreau Club are benefitting from Amber’s expertise, on and off the courts.
